dream home

I don't really want a 'dream home'. I don't want to settle down in one house to raise my kids and then grandkids and then great-grandkids. I don't want to be trapped within the confines of the same exact walls from this moment until the day I die.

The whole idea sounds like torture.

Sometimes my house feels like a prison. (Although, I think it may have something to do with the little wardens that keep me from leaving at my leisure.) And once I've lived in one place long enough I just get really really bored.

We've been married for 8 years and moved 7 times. I always hate the moving part, but I do like being somewhere new. And the house we're in right now is actually perfect for us. Just the size we need, great neighbors, close to the school, blah blah blah. The only thing is that we're renting and I can't paint the walls. I like painting walls. But for the most part, I really like living here. Granted, we've only lived here for seven months, so I haven't had a chance to get bored yet. (And yeah, it feels like a prison sometimes, but I think any house would feel that way at this point.)

But if, for some reason, I was forced into choosing a dream home, there would be a few non-negotiable requirements:

1- Hidden passageways. Because, if you're going to force me to live somewhere for the rest of my life, then I must have the option of traveling from room to room creatively. Also, no one else will know about these passageways but me. Except someday I might show my grandkids where they are...maybe.

2- An art studio/sewing/craft/MY room that no one else is ever allowed to touch. EVER. Have I made myself clear?

3- A cleaning lady. Because if I'm stuck in the same house forever, then you can't expect me to want to clean it when I get bored with it. That's the first thing that starts slacking when I've lived somewhere too long.

4- An intercom system throughout the whole house. And you'd have to know a code to use the intercom so that the kids couldn't do it. Also I might tell the kids that it's not really an intercom but just me, able to boss them around at all times. I think video survellaince might also be a good idea since that would really convince them that I'm omniscient.

5- Everything else is pretty normal. You know like: big backyard, open floorplan, laundry chutes that could double as kid slides, bowling alley in the basement. General typical stuff.

But for now, I think I'll just keep up our habit of moving often. Eventually we may even get out of this state....although I've been trying that one for years and haven't managed it yet.

I am with you on number 2 especially. Your own happy place. (sigh)

Lol! Yes your requests are very normal indeed. We have also been married 8 years and our last move was number 7. But ours also involved 4 different states.

I'm the opposite. I like to put down roots and watch both my family and plants grow in the same place.

I've given up on the fancy 'dream house'. We have a nice house and it's enough just to hold onto it! However, your requirements sound just right. If I could have all of your conditions met for myself, I'd even be willing to move.

Sounds practically perfect in every way.

I'd like a house with 2 toilets. It's all I want. 2. Feel my stupid british pain.

Oh gosh-I hate moving! I think I could stay in the same place forever. But I love your ideas for your dream home. Especially a mom-only intercom so little kids can't go crazy with it:)

I like your ideas. Except I'm a stick to the same house till it's paid off and then we die type deal. It's not a big house but we've fixed it up, partially, and it sufficeth. I have plants in the back yard that I planted in honor of my late father..so yah-can never move now. (I guess *some* people might say I could dig them up and replant but that would be silly, needless work).

My parents stayed in the same house I was raised in and even though I liked to move when my kids were young, once they started school and we bought a house I wanted to stay put. mostly. till we had a short lived incident with a mouse and at that point I would have paid someone else to take the house off our hands. But looking back, I was being silly. lol

It's funny. I really want my dream home and to stay there forever. But I have the same restlessness that you do. We've been married almost 9 years and have moved 8 times. And I'm starting to feel it. . .

Oh, I don't know. I have dreams of moving to foreign countries temporarily, but we just moved across town after 8 years in the same house, and now I'm remembering all the work: finding places for everything, decorating, making curtains. no, thanks. Unless we are moving to a castle in England, I'm not moving!

Great thoughts. I keep changing my mind. I want a "dream house" that we can have in the family for generations AND I want to move all the time so too. Is that asking for too much? ;-)

GIVEAWAY (of the photo Christmas card variety)

I think I just creeped out my four year old. I pulled out the, "You'd better go to bed because Santa's Elves are watching you to make sure you're being good!" routine. His eyes got big, and round, and scared. And he said, "Why would they do that?!" Also, our church building burned down yesterday. No wait, it didn't. But the alarm went off, and the entire ward just sat there in the chapel (and gym, because we have an enormous ward.) I sat there too. I don't know what everyone else was thinking, but the thought going through my head was, "Can somebody please get that alarm turned off, it is WAY TOO LOUD!!!!" Seriously, I think our ward is now 37% deafer after that. Oh, and there was no actual fire. And the first fire truck to show up was driven by one of our ward members who was on duty that day. Good times. And now, that GIVEAWAY: For procrastinators everywhere (that would include me) I'm giving away one free photo Christmas card d

little pieces of my heart will be for sale at D.I.

I have this thing about my kids clothes. The thing is, I LIKE BUYING THEM CLOTHES. I get in trouble frequently for this. It's just that the old ones get so boring after awhile. And I hate it when the really cheap clothes look like poop after washing them a couple of times. Luckily, I live in a city that has outlet stores. I love outlet stores (and Ebay!) Alot of the time you can find higher quality clothes for Walmart prices so how could I NOT buy them? It would be like wasting money for me NOT to get a couple $4 shirts at OshKosh. Right? RIGHT?!! The problem is - we have tiny closets. Miniature, puny, ridiculous, TINY closets. The other problem is - I have saved EVERYTHING. Not only are the kids' closets chuck full of stuff, but we have multiple rubbermaid bins in our garage full of baby clothes they've all grown out of. Also, we may not be having any more children. And I say "may not" because if I say "for sure not" someone will have to co
