this post is just about STUFF

I keep remodeling my house.....in my head. I even drew up floorplans and elevations and landscape diagrams.

Except that I'm ignoring a couple of crucial details.

1. It costs a lot of money to remodel. Especially when I use the word "remodel" when referring to adding an entire second floor.

AND

2. We don't own this house. Yeah, landlords kind of look down on the concept of tenant wall removal.

But still, I have big plans for this house. BIG PLANS. But like most of my plans, they will never ever, EVER, E.V.E.R. actually happen.

Which really blows.

The landlords have, however, given us permission to improve the yard in anyway we desire.  Which is why I threw in the landscaping diagrams.  But when I approached Husband on the subject, he gave me a big lecture on Exception Number One (the costing money thing) and then went on ignoring the jungle that is our back yard.

Until today, when he said, "We should get chickens!"  And I said, "Where would we put them?"  And he said, "We can build them a chicken coop in the back yard!"  And I said, "So, you're willing to spend money on a CHICKEN COOP, but not on making our yard better for us HUMANS?"

And he wouldn't even want to get chicks.  He wants to jump to full blown chickens.  Which is just a waste of chicken getting, if you ask me.

Plus, I'd rather have a nice yard.

But Husband will hear none of it.  Which kind of makes me want to punch him.

In the eye.

ON THE OTHER HAND, guess what?

I finally have a new edition of The Barrel out!  I KNOW, it's been forever.  But you were all busy being summer-y anyway, right?  So that's ok that it's been forever.

I'm going to have an announcement soon concerning the magazine.  Because it's going to kind of change.  But it's going to be good (you'll like it).  But yeah, for now, just go read this issue.

ALSO, and totally unrelated, I crocheted this really cute shirt and I want to show it off:

Number Four has no future in modeling.  Not because she isn't adorable (because she's obviously THAT) but because the second I tell her she has to model for a picture she gets all grumpy and mean.  And I had to bribe her with candy and make Husband hit himself in the face while he stood behind me just to get her to look in the right direction.

(If you want to crochet this same shirt, I'm actually selling the pattern in my etsy shop.  Because, I think it's cute.  So naturally, I think you all want to make it too.)

Have you read Big Plans? (BIG PLANS, I SAY!)

You must.

I think it's time to buy a house and lay down roots in Utah. You will be here the rest of your life.

I second Kristina's suggestion. I have a friend who has been renting a townhouse with a family of 6 for 13 years because she's CONVINCED she's only here temporarily. Note-Utah is the new Hotel California!

Super cute shirt!
It'd be fun to figure out how to add a whole new story to a house. I think if I did that---I'd make it one, big open room with hardwood floors.

GIVEAWAY (of the photo Christmas card variety)

I think I just creeped out my four year old. I pulled out the, "You'd better go to bed because Santa's Elves are watching you to make sure you're being good!" routine. His eyes got big, and round, and scared. And he said, "Why would they do that?!" Also, our church building burned down yesterday. No wait, it didn't. But the alarm went off, and the entire ward just sat there in the chapel (and gym, because we have an enormous ward.) I sat there too. I don't know what everyone else was thinking, but the thought going through my head was, "Can somebody please get that alarm turned off, it is WAY TOO LOUD!!!!" Seriously, I think our ward is now 37% deafer after that. Oh, and there was no actual fire. And the first fire truck to show up was driven by one of our ward members who was on duty that day. Good times. And now, that GIVEAWAY: For procrastinators everywhere (that would include me) I'm giving away one free photo Christmas card d...

hair loss and mourning

I like Monkey's hair long.  I tried to grow out Opie's hair when he was younger, but he has always had a tremendously large head, and he also has very thick wavy hair.  You pair those two together, throw in some long locks, and you've got yourself a genuinely bonified giant-head child.  So I've learned my lesson: keep Opie's hair short. But Monkey's hair?  It's so soft, and straight (our only straight-haired child) and super super cute when it's long.  SUPER CUTE.  (Agree with me - it's my blog.)  But not many people liked the whole long hair thing.  I kept having to threaten various family members with things like, "If I come back to find him with short hair I will DISOWN you, run away with my kids and you will never hear from us again.  EVER."  (Husband was particularly sensitive to this threat.) However, I did say that once random strangers started referring to him as a girl, I would consider cutting it.  And even though ...

A Not Yet Forgotten Moment

I have one grandma that loves telling us stories, but my other grandma never thinks her stories would interest us and therefore keeps them to herself.   Now that she's aging, she's sadly starting to forget the stories.  And besides that, she's wrong - her stories would very much interest me. My grandma Deonna (Morgan) Van Nosdol, my dad in the middle, and my two uncles. Sometimes I try to get tricky and ask round about questions to get her to tell me stuff from her past.  She gets upset when she can't remember certain things.  But then sometimes things just come right out. For instance, a few weeks ago I was talking to her about a frustration I was having with one of my kids, and asked what my dad was like when he was younger.  Grandma started talking about how my dad was a very calm and serious child.  He would go outside behind their house, over by the clothes line, and build stuff all day.  He had wood and nails and he would keep himself ent...
